I'm always open to dabble with or investigate new or different fishing methods.
There has been a bit of publicity promoting what was named in the press as "disco scallops"
. I couldn't leave this one alone.
The concept is simple, scallops are attracted to light, make a trap with a light in it, catch scallops with no seabed damage. Sounds simple.
There are reports of decent numbers being caught at times. I had little useable success and couldn't find regular or consistent results that were economically viable. I had up to 34 scallops in one pot but this was a 5 day soak through small tides. I had an awful lot of nothing as well and given the soak times required, the need to be clear of tide and in deep dark water I could not make this work in this area. I will try again in the dark winter months of Nov-Jan. Meanwhile if anyone wants to buy some new scallop pots?
